Orange County is a coastal county in Southern California, located approximately one hour-drive north of San Diego and 2.5 hour-drive south of Santa Barbara.
The region which makes up Orange County initially developed as an area of Spanish Land Grant Ranchos in the 1700s. In the late 1800s, silver was discovered in the Santa Ana Mountains, spurring growth and further development. With this growth, agriculture gained prominence, namely in the form of citrus groves. The mid-1900s saw the transition of the county into a high technology and business center.
The living environment and climate in Orange County are pleasant as a coastal region of California, with recreational activities including those in nearby Newport Bay and adjacent beach cities, harbors, parks, and mountains.
Numerous cultural activities are available, including at the nearby Pacific Symphony, the South Coast Repertory, the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, the Irvine Barclay Theatre, Bowers Museum, the Laguna Art Museum, the Orange County Museum of Art, and the Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts - Pageant of the Masters. Residents and fellows in the department have privileges as part of the University of California, Irvine community, including opportunities for learning outside of medicine and radiology on the main university campus in Irvine. Additionally, there are recreational opportunities through the UC Irvine Campus Recreation Center, which includes instructional classes in sailing and sailboat rentals at the UC Irvine Sailing Base in Newport Harbor.
