LIFE IN ORANGE COUNTY | UC IRVINE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE | UC IRVINE

Dear prospective resident,

Thank you for your interest in our program. The UCI Department of Radiological Sciences offers a 4-year residency training program in Diagnostic Radiology, including all aspects of medical imaging. Apart from our state-of-the-art brand new hospital and equipment, fantastic location and great weather, our residency program offers exceptional education and training that will prepare you for a career in academic radiology or private practice.
Where have our residents gone for fellowship?
New residents will complete one year of rotations before being assigned any independent in-house call. In general, the call is structured to be "bottom-heavy" with very light call assigned to more senior residents. The chief residents make the rotation and call schedules, with the approval of the program director, and actively elicit the preferences of individual residents.

On average, we have 12 hours of teaching conferences every week, including an entire afternoon dedicated solely to didactic teaching. In addition, our residents are actively involved in giving teaching conferences to fellow radiology residents and rotating medical students, and regularly present at inter-departmental conferences and grand rounds.

We offer a required dedicated research rotation in addition to elective time that can be used for research. Nearly all of our residents have published journal articles, co-authored book chapters, and/or presented at national and local society meetings.

Our department provides an excellent educational allowance for the residents. As 1st years, some basic textbooks will be provided. The department will also cover your California Medical Board Licensing fee as well as your initial American Board of Radiology registration fee during your 1st year. Discretionary funds of up to $400 will also be provided for residents to use during their 2nd and 3rd years. Our program provides a $3500 stipend for a 4 week course in Washington, D.C. at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) during the 3rd year. As 4th years, the program provides up to $2000 towards your choice of board review courses. Lastly, the department provides funding for residents presenting at national meetings and attendance at certain teaching conferences.

We look forward to seeing you and answering your questions.

Sincerely,

Chris Lee & Jed Santa Maria
